One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
— Lewis Carroll

You may not be able to predict all the ways the road ahead meanders and forks, but there is a big difference between being surprised and blindsided because you had no plan and adapting an existing plan to a new situation. It is a confidence builder when you anticipate your results and challenges correctly (or close enough) and a way to keep you accountable (to yourself). For instance, re-reading your plan in the future might disabuse you of the notion that “this is where I wanted to be all along” if you end-up not where you were aiming for. What’s the value of that? Telling yourself the truth is fundamental to developing useful business instincts.

Your business plan doesn’t have to be a huge footnoted document covering every contingency in detail. Short and focused is great. You only really need to pile on the proofs if you intend to take it out to institutional and accredited investors and then it becomes part of a much bigger package which includes a formalized Private Placement Memorandum (PPM) and more. After all, if you’re going to ask people to invest hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars you need to thoroughly document you are really serious and know what you are doing inside and out.

Something in between the institutional plan and what you may use as an internal benchmark is what you might show your community banker for an SBA loan. Again more detail is required, especially in the financial models, but you don’t need the PPM and all the citations.
