"A daydreamer is prepared for most things."

Viktor Lawryniuk - Wednesday, April 18, 2012

"A daydreamer is prepared for most things."

Joyce Carol Oates

American author.

Sometimes I worry I don't daydream enough, other times that I drift-off too much.  How prepared does one need to be?

Public Opinion

Viktor Lawryniuk - Friday, February 17, 2012

“One should as rule respect public opinion in so far as is necessary to avoid starvation and to keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny, and is likely to interfere with happiness in all kinds of ways.”

—Betrand Russell, (May 18, 1872—February 2, 1970)

British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, and social critic.

I have a tendency to drop-off from writing blog posts and journal entries when life comes at me furiously, as it has these past few months. I know that maintaining a blog requires constant feeding, but it does sometimes become a tyranny, however self-imposed.

“Writing is like jazz. It can be learned, but it can’t be taught.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Thursday, September 15, 2011

“Writing is like jazz. It can be learned, but it can’t be taught.”

 —Paul Desmond,  (November 25, 1924 – May 30, 1977)

Born Paul Emil Breitenfeld,  jazz alto saxophonist and composer.

I found this quote in Garr Reynold’s excellent book Presentationzen Design and it got me thinking about all that I am learning that is self-taught —is that a contradiction?

“Everybody’s a dreamer, Everybody’s a star, Everybody’s in showbiz, Doesn’t matter who you are.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Tuesday, August 16, 2011

“Everybody’s a dreamer,

Everybody’s a star,

Everybody’s in showbiz,

Doesn’t matter who you are.”

Ray Davies (The Kinks), Celluloid Heroes

I’ve been listening to See My Friends,  Ray Davies’ compilation of songs he recorded with various guest artists lately and his updated Celluloid Heroes wormed its way into my ear and stuck in my head. I have been thinking about how to write a page for a website I am collaborating in building and these lyrics reminded me that some things we think are specialized are actually quite common. In a way, we all are in showbiz, just like we are all in sales and we all advertise, one way or another.

“Stoop and you’ll be stepped on; stand tall and you’ll be shot at.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Saturday, August 06, 2011

“Stoop and you’ll be stepped on; stand tall and you’ll be shot at.”

—Carlos A. Urbizo

I saw this quote for the first time today and it made me think how every action (or inaction) we take has a consequence and that sometimes what seems “safest” can turn out to be worse than the seemingly riskier choice.

I think that this Urbzino is made-up because the only thing I can find on him is this quote and the LinkedIn profiles I saw didn’t seem to be of the kind that would be originating quotes. Anyone know any different?

“Everyone is a genius at least once a year. The real geniuses simply have their bright ideas closer together.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Friday, July 29, 2011

“Everyone is a genius at least once a year. The real geniuses simply have their bright ideas closer together.”

—Georg C. Lichtenberg (1 July 1742 – 24 February 1799)

German scientist, satirist and Anglophile.

I think it is more fun to look for the genius in others and celebrate it than assume most others are either stupid or competition.

“The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Friday, July 22, 2011

“The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.”

Dorothy Parker  (August 22, 1893 – June 7, 1967)

American poet, short story writer, and satirist.

I’m happy there is no cure for curiosity but sometimes I wish I weren’t so distractible by the interesting and novel…

“Achieving conventional goals, such as profits and joy, with unconventional methods, such as investing energy instead of money.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Wednesday, July 20, 2011

“Achieving conventional goals, such as profits and joy, with unconventional methods, such as investing energy instead of money.”

-Jay Conrad Levinson (1933-)

American promoter of Guerrilla Marketing.

This quote made me think, “What is unconventional?” Maybe substituting energy for money was unconventional once, but now I think the truly unconventional thinkers are figuring out ways to leverage technology to accomplish more in less time for less money and energy. Four hour workweek anyone?

“What does not destroy me, makes me stronger.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Tuesday, July 19, 2011

“What does not destroy me, makes me stronger.”

 –Friedrich Nietzsche (October 15, 1844 – August 25, 1900)

German philosopher.

As our so-called recovery crawls along I know many a small business that has seen neighbors and competitors disappear while they wonder, “Are we next?” In one of the strange correlations of history, it seems times like these are characterized by unusual innovative ferment and the businesses that got their start or simply made it through are often the dynamos of the next expansion.

And, yes, just as spring and summer follow autumn and winter, expansion will be back, probably when you have given up any hope of seeing easier times ever again.

“Work is love made visible.”

Viktor Lawryniuk - Monday, July 18, 2011

“Work is love made visible.”

–Kahlil Gibran (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931)

Lebanese poet and philosopher.

I picked this quote to lead off this blog because I have been rethinking this website and how I want to present what I do. It's not always obvious where doing what you love leads to until you get there.
